What is ETS?

ETS is an acronym for Educational Testing Service. It is a non-profit company which conducts standardized tests worldwide for entry into graduate and doctoral courses. The tests are conducted in 180 countries with over 9000 test centers. ETS has been the pioneers in the education testing field since their establishment in 1947. Some of the famous tests they conduct are:

  • ETS GRE ( Graduate Record Examination )
  • ETS TOEFL ( Test Of English as Foreign Language )
  • ETS TOEIC ( Test Of English for International Communication )

ETS was formed with teaching professionals and researchers from three companies, namely,

  • The American Council on Education,
  • The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and
  • The College Entrance Examination Board.

The founders formed the company with a focus on raising awareness of educational issues, developing assessments that are valid and fair, and conducting research that drives innovation and informs education policy.

What does ETS Do?

ETS collaborates with educational institutions, governments and businesses to provide meaningful assessment and research services that can evaluate applicants. ETS has five internal teams that make it possible to provide quality educational testing content.

The Research team of ETS has been at the forefront of computer-based testing, which allowed them to innovate in the types of questions, scheduling, etc. The listening and speaking part of the ETS TOEFL or GRE test is not possible with the conventional paper-based test. The team has been working on new methods of delivery of questions.

The Assessment Development team develops a test from designing to scoring for a client. They take care of structuring and delivering the test.

The Test Administration team leads the conduct of computer-delivered, paper-delivered and internet-delivered tests. They try to accommodate persons with disability in order to give them a fair chance at cracking the test by having sign language experts, braille code, etc.

Test Scoring team, as the name suggests, makes sure there are no discrepancies or partiality while scoring the test.

Instructional Podcast and Services team provides the participants with free and paid

materials for preparation of the exam.

What is ETS GRE?

ETS GRE is conducted all over the world and is used for admissions into graduate, business and doctoral degrees. The test tests the candidate’s ability to think critically and the ability to analyse. It is done through tests on Verbal reasoning, Quantitative reasoning and Analytical writing. A candidate can opt to write any of the two types of ETS GRE tests namely, ETS GRE General Test and ETS GRE Subject test.

What is ETS TOEFL?

TOEFL is one of the most popular English proficiency tests taken by the international candidates for study, immigration and work purposes. Over 10,000 universities and several other institutions located in more than 150 countries use TOEFL scores for shortlisting candidates. The acceptance of this test in developed countries like the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany etc. also adds to its popularity.
